Bring the Outdoors In: My Terrarium Making Adventure

Let’s be honest, sometimes our homes just need a little green pick me up. A few weeks ago, I was craving a creative project that didn’t require too much time or effort, but still gave me that satisfying “I made this!” feeling. Enter: the terrarium.

Terrariums are these magical little tabletop gardens that instantly brighten up a room, and the best part? They're super low maintenance. I spent just 30 minutes making mine and now it’s one of my favourite pieces of décor.

Here’s what I used to build mine:

• A clear glass container (something about seeing all the layers makes it feel extra special!)
• Cactus and succulent potting mix
• A mix of tiny succulents and plants (I looked for fun textures and a few pops of colour)
• Moss in a few different shades to give it that lush, forest floor feel

Here’s how it came together:

  1. Choose your container. I went with a wide glass bowl so I could get creative with the layout. Tall jars or geometric shapes also look amazing.
  2. Add your soil. I used a cactus and succulent mix since my plants like dry conditions. You only need a few inches.
  3. Prep your plants. Gently take them out of their nursery pots and loosen the roots a bit. It's oddly therapeutic.
  4. Start planting. I began with my tallest plant in the back and worked my way forward with the shorter ones. I wanted a bit of an asymmetrical vibe, so I grouped them to one side and left space in front for moss.
  5. Add the moss. I tore it into small pieces and tucked it in around the plants. It instantly made the whole thing look complete.
  6. Find it a home. Once I was done, I placed it in a bright spot (but out of direct sunlight) and it’s been thriving ever since.

I love how this project adds a pop of life to my space and making it was such a peaceful way to spend half an hour. If you’re looking for a fun little escape or a unique gift idea, give terrarium making a try. I promise, you’ll be hooked after your first one.
